The wonderful world of moving Object…

The wonderful world of moving object photography. This is a juvenile Thai Red Mountain Rat Snake (Oreocryptophis porphyraceus coxi). We’re working with a small group of Asian Rat Snakes and coxi are among the most popular these days.

O. p. coxi, as well as a few other Asian rat snakes are very easy to carw for, and are very rewarding. These are especially active animals, constantly on the move. Our animals were quite “flighty” as neonates. They would bolt at the first sign of us, often jumping right out of their enclosure. At feeding time they strike very quickly, often landing a strike and wrapping the prey in a blink.

Although this species is easy to care for, the Thai Red Mountain Rat Snake prefer cooler temperatures compared to other colubrids. If temperatures exceed 75 F or higher coxi tend to stress, stop feeding. Keepers are best keeping these snakes in 68-72 F range.
